Diabetes and Your Blood Vessels
I explain to all my diabetic patients about diabetes’ life threatening risk. Patients with diabetes face the risk of a cardiovascular event. Diabetes increases the risk of premature heart attack and stroke by 10 to 15 years. Heart disease is the primary cause of diabetes-related deaths. Patients with diabetes are two to four times more likely to die of heart and blood vessel disease.
Factors For Early Death The risk factor of diabetes is equal to the risk factor of coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease (CHD) occurs when one or more of the coronary arteries that surround the heart become narrower, restricting the flow of blood to the heart muscle. A report from the National Cholesterol Education Program states that diabetes is equal to a CHD risk factor for heart attack and stroke. In addition, individuals with diabetes who experience a heart attack have an unusually high death rate either immediately or in the long term, because the persistently high blood sugar levels effect the rate of hardening of the arteries and disease activity.
Other Complications of Diabetes
Other complications of diabetes include high blood pressure, blindness, kidney failure, nervous system disease (numb and painful hands and feet), impotence, amputations, dental disease, complications of pregnancy, and is one of many causes of Alzheimer’s disease.
