PART 2
Food lovers believe that eating is one of life’s greatest pleasures. But if they could only
see that it can become one of life’s greatest causes of misery.
Fermentation Causes Acidosis
Raw fruits and raw veggies require totally different enzyme combinations for their effective digestion. The body when faced with this dilemma will try to digest the vegetables first and the fruit which requires no stomach digestion is held up and will start to ferment (producing unwanted acidosis), thus further delaying digestion. This process will ultimately deliver contaminants to your blood stream. Other factors that retard proper digestion and thus increase the likelihood of causing fermentation include: baking soda, condiments of all kinds (which either destroy the enzymes or inhibit secretion of digestive juices), salt (in any quantity greater than a small amount, inhibits stomach digestion) and eating complex mixtures of foods. Simplify your diet. The simpler the better. Your food should be as close to the way it comes from the garden for the best results. I personally can tell a difference when I get too many combinations in how I feel, my rnood, my sleep patterns and my energy level.
Too Many Combinations
I have patients that tell me that they don’t notice any increased gas, brain fog or indigestion when they combine fruits and vegetables. That’s because they are eating so many combinations of foods that their bodies are always feeding their blood stream partially digested nutrients. They are so used to feeling this way, they don’t know the best they can feel.
There is one exception to this rule of not combining fruits and vegetables; you may combine acid citrus fruits, pineapple, papaya and avocado with your veggies. This is because these are alkaline forming in the body.
The Real Acid Forming Foods
When I talk about certain food being acid foods (like lemons, oranges, strawberries, cherries, etc.), I do not mean they are acid-forming in the body. These fruits actually are alkaline in reaction to the body after they are eaten, provided the alkaline reserve (bicarbonate buffer) is high enough to convert the acid. Burning as fuel, these foods in the cells produce energy and make carbonic acid gas, which is shuttled by the lymph and blood to the lungs and exhaled. About 30 quarts of carbonic acid gas (about a third of all body wastes) is exhaled per hour by the average individual, leaving the body no harm and in an alkali state.
The real acid forming foods have a lot of starch, protein and fat in them, such as beans, nuts, eggs, meats and cheese. Foods, that are acid or alkaline forming depend on how they are cooked and eaten. For example, a mealy baked potato is alkaline in reaction if it is chewed well, and if the skins are eaten. If it is washed down or swallowed whole, the digestion is not complete, and it is acid-forming. Similarly, fried, greasy potatoes are acid forming.
What’s The Remedy For Too Much Acid?
Long before dialysis for kidney failure, doctors knew to give bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) to relieve bloated stomachs. They found that these patient’s bones began to re-mineralize and get stronger. Even today I will add sodium bicarbonate tabs 600 mg three tirnes a day for renal failure patients to balance their insufficient excretion of acid from their kidneys. Many studies have been done to evaluate this acid/base effect. Many people take bicarbonates at mealtime, but this neutralizes the stomach acid needed to digest your food. They are just treating the symptoms (an overly acid diet), not the problem! Eating an acid producing diet may not have caused you any problerns yet, but eventually you’ll pay with your health. The NO-BRAINER is to change your diet to an alkaline based diet. Duh! Desert the dessert. Eaten on top of meals, they lie heavy on the stomach, fermenting and slowing the total digestive process down. Bacteria turn desserts into alcohols, vinegars and acetic acid.
Are You Suffocating?
Poor oxygen utilization originates from acidosis. I studied this oxygen saturation curve in medical school. One of the primary waste products of thebody is carbon dioxide (CO2). Alkaline Compounds (Bicarbonates) are required in the cell to exchange oxygen for CO2. When your alkali supply is too low, CO2 stays in the cells and piles up in the suffocating tissues. "The Great American Diet" causes chronic acidosis which causes "couch potato” people to sigh a lot, experience breathlessness, pant at the least exertion, have frequent muscle pain, have insomnia (can’t sleep), have a constant "1ump" in their throat (from dehydration and loss of sodium), have chronic fatigue, have blisters in their mouth from eating citrus, have low back pain, have recurrent urinary tract infections, have symptomatic low blood pressures and have difficulty holding their breath for at least 20 seconds. If you have any of these symptorns you probably are too acidic.
Starving for Air?
In scuba diving, divers that are more acidic run out of air quickly; while those that are more pH balanced can make a tank of air "last forever." Saliva approximates the blood pH at 6.5 to 7.0. If yours consistently falls below 6.5, you are too acidic. If yours consistently reads above 7.0, you could be too alkaline. You can find test strips on the internet. Urine tests aren’t accurate for body pH.
Acidosis-Cancer, Diabetes And Heart Disease
Acidic abundance in your tissue is common during the initial formation of cancer. Hyper acidity appears to contribute to insulin sensitivity problems that lead to diabetes. Chronic acidosis is underIying in the number one killer, heart disease. Acidosis interferes with the exchange of oxygen and CO2 at the cellular level, suffocating the heart muscle, causing the heart to pump harder and more often to supply oxygen to the other organs of the body. The natural ratio for a healthy body is four parts alkaline to one part acid (ratio 4:1). When such a ratio is maintained the body has a strong resistance against disease. Remember, alkali bases neutralize acids. It is just asdangerous to become too alkaline as too acidic; temperance in all things.
So What Can I Do?
The first adjustment is to eat a more alkaline diet, not mix fruits and vegetables (because you are eating more simply, you willnotice) and 50% of your food should be raw (ie, fruits and veggies). When this is done, there willbe little to no room for meat, fish, or fowl. You need 75-80% of your food to be alkaline. If you are not eating a diet rich in whole grains, fruits and veggies, you’re not getting enough base containing foods. Vegetable4 juicing can jurnp-start this process of alkalinizing your body. If you make these changes in your diet youcan experience a dramatic difference in your health in just a couple of weeks.
I’m So Tried
Weariness comes from these acid-formmg wastes in your body. The custom of the day is to eat a highly acid diet and we wonder why we are so chronically fatigued and can’t sleep at night! The tiredness from which one can not rest, the inability to concentrate on mental work or to apply one’s self to the day’s task is, in many cases, from poisoning of the nerve cells. This is because of the pollution of the body fluids which bathe all those vital cells. In the lab, nerves can’t be fatigued when repeatedly stimulated, but the accumulation and over-production of acid products drugs the nerves, ultimately injuring them, sometimes permanently.
We Need Less Protein
If you follow this counsel you will need much less protein in your diet. This is the second adjustment. Due to an acid medium’s rapid destruction of protein, the body’s requirement for protein increases, while an alkaline environment spares this usual destruction of protein. Eating less protein will protect your kidneys and extend your life. When I speak of protein most people think of meat, which is very concentrated. Don’t do as so many before have done and substitute eggs and bread for meat or sugar for meat; all of which are acid forrning. If you do this you havemade the problem worse.
Stuff We Should Have Known!
“There should not be a great variety at any one meal, for this encourages overeating and causes indigestion."
"It is not well to eat fruit and vegetables at the same meal. If digestion is feeble, the use of both will often cause distress, and inability to put forth mental effort. It is beller to have fruit at one meal, and the vegetables at another.” 1905
“Many are made sick by indulgence of their appetite... So many varieties are introduced into the stomach that fermentation is the result. This condition brings on acute disease, and death frequently follows.” 1897
“If your work is sedentary, take exercise every day and at each meal eat two or three kinds of simple food taking no more of these than will satisfythe demands of hunger.” 1896
"Disturbance is created by improper combinations of food; fermentation sets in; the blood is contaminated and the brain confused... In vain the stomach protests, and appeals to the brain to reason from cause to effect. The excessive amount of food eaten, or the improper combination, does its injurious work” 1902
‘Many eat too rapidly. Others eat at one meal food which does not agree. If men and women would only remember how greatly they afflict the soul when they afflict the stomach, and how deeply Christ is dishonored when the stomach is abused, they would be brave and self denying, giving the stomach opportunity to recover its healthy action. While sitting at the table we may do medical missionary work by eating and drinking to the Glory of God.” 1901
"The digestive organs have an important part to act in our life happiness. God has given us intelligence, that we may learn what we should use as food. Shall we not, as sensible men and women, study whether the things we eat will be in agreement, or whether they will cause trouble? People who have a sour stomach are very often of a sour disposition. Everything seems to be contrary to them, and they are inclined to be. peevish and irritable. If we would have peace among ourselves, we should give more thought than we do to having a peaceful stomach.”1908
“I took notice of your diet. You eat too great a variety at one meal. Fruit and vegetables taken at one meal produce acidity of the stomach; then impurity of the blood results, and the mind is not clear because the digestion is imperfect.” 1908
