-Here’s the truth about dip Many of my patients have quit smoking, only to start using chewing tobacco, dipping tobacco or using snuff products to quite their nicotine habits. When they come in to the hospital with chest pain I ask the usual question, “Do you smoke?” They will say, “ no!” The family members tell me they dip and you will never get grandpa or grandma to quit. My patients say it is their last pleasure in life. Last, is correct. The American Cancer Society says the tobacco companies start your habit out on sugary, long cut dip that’s easy for the new dipper to handle. As you get used to the buzz from the nicotine, you want more. You starting chewing more. You begin trying finer cut brands with more nicotine to satisfy your need. That’s exactly what the tobacco companies want to keep you as a customer. My patients know they are hooked. They tell you they felt high the first time they tried it. Nicotine is additive and a drug. It’s a fact that dipping snuff causes lip, cheek, tongue and other types of oral cancer. The longer you dip, the greater your chances of getting oral cancer. First, the dipper’s gums start to recede. Next, the mouth tissue is damaged beyond repair. Mouth sores or ulcers, look like grayish white places on the inner cheek, begin to appear. Nearly 90% of all oral cancers start from these ulcers. What you do with the facts is up to you! -American Cancer Society, 2000
